Gamepad

We've added GamePad support to many GallantRealm games. A GamePad is a special keyboard that provides a DPad and buttons similar to the good old console style video games. GamePads are on Sony Xperia PLAY phone and the Gametel controller. As the GamePad keys are mapped to standard key codes, you'll likely find more devices supporting GamePad. The following instructions describe how to use the GamePad and, in particular, how to set up the Gametel controller.

Gametel Setup

The Gametel uses your device's bluetooth support. But turning on bluetooth and the controller is not enough to make it ready to use. You also need to pair the controller with your Android device, and select the controller to use as the keyboard.

Pairing the controller on most Android devices is not difficult. Gametel provides an app that you can use to do this. Download the Gametel app, start up the Gametel and connect it.

When using the Gametel in the future, upon turning on the controller you will be prompted to select a keyboard. You should choose the Gametel keyboard to then fully enable the controller. (Note that it will replace your standard keyboard, so you'll want to turn off the Gametel when you are done playing.)

Using Gamepad

For all of the Gallant Realm games, once the 3D portion of the game is started, you can use the Gamepad to control everything. This means we've mapped the Gamepad's DPad and buttons to all the functions of the game.

The DPad replaces the joystick and can be used in the same way. However, since the DPad only has four buttons, we've had to get creative to provide a reasonable control capability. What we do is move the joystick values slowly, so that you can press and release the DPad's buttons you can adjust the horizontal and vertical amounts. With practice you can use the DPad almost as well as a joystick by pressing the DPad buttons for varying durations.

There are eight buttons on most GamePads. The Gallant Realm games don't utilize all of the buttons for separate functions. Instead, several buttons on the GamePad have the same function. The table below shows the usual mapping of the buttons:

Button Function
Select Change view function
Play Pause the game.
Right Trigger The button that appears on the top-right of the screen. Usually, start game or fire button.
Left Trigger The button that appears second down on the right. Usually some special function, like Nitro in Race the Robots.
A Performs the same function as the down DPad button. It is useful when racing as it acts like the brake.
B Performs the same function as the up DPad button. It is useful when racing as it acts like the accelerator.
X The OK or leftmost button on dialogs. Also, the button that appears on the top-right of the screen.
Y The Cancel or Quit button on dialogs. Also, the button that appears second down on the right.

Keep an eye out for buttons appearing and disappearing on the top right. The intention of this is to make certain functions available at the right times for Gamepad use, but the buttons can also be pressed when not using Gamepad.
